#28 - Nice cans
The can wall and its
relatives (the can stack, the can pyramid and
the somewhat less ingenious long row of cans) are
seemingly a dorm-dweller's rite of passage. But
why? What is the meaning of the can wall, and what
can we derive about its makers based on its continuing
existence? My current theory is that can walls are
a sort of non-aggressive territorial display. They are concrete proof of a
commitment to something, and an incremental reminder of the
passage of time. The longer one spends on something,
the more cans are acquired and the taller the
stack/wall/pyramid/row/whatever becomes. Walking into
a room with a can wall is meant to prompt the following
inner commentary: "Wow, look at all of those cans!
This person really must spend a long time every day doing
[sedentary activity]! I am impressed and awed!"
Interestingly, builders of can walls may not be entirely
certain of the purpose of their own creations, and may in
fact not be consciously aware that they are building
anything until their work is called into question by a
skeptical outsider. When this occurs, the
can-wall-builder may find his or herself at a loss for words
but nevertheless offended.
Short comics coming to town
Whenever it is that
I have time, I'm going to start rolling out a short comic
now and then between regular updates. Watch for those!
